LOVELAND, Colo. - On Wednesday, August 12, just after 2 p.m., the Loveland Police Department responded to a serious traffic crash involving three pedestrians at the intersection of Knobcone Drive and Highway 287 (N. Garfield Avenue).
A 2015 Dodge RAM 1500, operated by a 34-year-old Loveland resident, struck a 27-year-old Loveland father and his two young children as they lawfully crossed Highway 287 within a designated crosswalk. All three pedestrians were transported to area hospitals. Two sustained serious bodily injuries. The driver of the truck was unharmed.
Preliminary findings indicate the truck had been stopped in the westbound left-turn lane on Knobcone Drive, waiting to turn south onto Highway 287. The truck waited for an eastbound vehicle to pass before turning left. The driver then failed to yield to the pedestrians, striking all three. The impact threw the father to the ground, while one child was pinned beneath the truck’s front tire.
Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been a factor.
Due to the severity of the crash, the Loveland Police Department CRASH Team responded and assumed the investigation. The roadway remained closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.
“Yesterday, a father and his two young children suffered serious injuries in a crash we believe could have been prevented,” said Chief Doran. “I send my heartfelt prayers to this family as they recover. Our department works relentlessly on traffic enforcement every day because it matters.”
“Traffic safety requires everyone’s attention, especially with school starting soon. Please slow down, put distractions away, and drive carefully. No family should ever endure what was experienced Wednesday.”
Loveland has recorded 12 pedestrian-involved crashes in 2026, including three within the past week. The Loveland Police Department thanks its partner agencies, including Loveland Fire Rescue Authority, Thompson Valley EMS and the Colorado Department of Transportation, as well as several good Samaritans who stopped to assist following the crash.
